In Detroit, doing the electric Tango

The unwritten rule used to be that electric cars needed to be bizarre-looking novelty acts embraced by eccentrics. Nowadays, cars like the forthcoming Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf want you to know they’re electric, but that they’re also “real cars” with actual passenger room and storage space. Heck, the Volt even packs a combustion engine whose sole purpose is to act as an on-board generator for when the battery charge runs too low for electric-only driving. In short, automakers are trying to de-stigmatize and mainstream the electric vehicle. Weirdness is out.

So it was nice to see Commuter Cars Corp. president Rick Woodbury standing next to his completely insane-looking labor of love at the Detroit Auto Show last week. It’s called the Tango. It’s electric, has 800 horsepower, 1,000 pounds of torque, does zero to 60 in four seconds, and George Clooney owns one. For $150,000, so can you. Oh, and did we mention that you probably have closets in your house that are bigger than this thing?
